Take a Brick

The everyday rituals that WFH workers used to
start and end a day of work.

Team: individual
Time: 2024.Mar, 1 month
Scale: 95x140x120 mm/ 3.74x5.51x4.72 inch
Materials: Unity, 3D printed PLA
This is a playful yet functional project designed to create a work-from-home ritual: a miniature construction site for your desk, accompanied by Woki (the little white character), digital workers that build alongside you.

Place your phone on the base to start—Woki begins construction, mirroring your progress. They work, overwork if you skip breaks, and rest when you step away. At the end of the day, your session results in a small house, gradually forming a growing town over time.
By establishing a work ritual, this project encourages focus, reduces phone distractions, and eases the guilt of stopping work by providing a visual, game-like reward.

How it works

Overall Journey

▲ Place the phone on the stand. Once a phone connects, Woki (the small white character) begins building the day’s house.
▲ The device determines whether work is in progress based on the phone’s connection. By the end of the day, if the set work hours are met, Woki completes the house; otherwise, it remains unfinished.

Before Starting the Day

▲ During setup, building materials can be selected and placed in front.
▲ The phone scans these materials; different materials produce different house designs.
▲ Once the phone is on the stand, Woki starts working.
▲ Scaffolding can be placed in front of the phone to reduce distractions.

Woki’s Different States
As Woki works, fatigue gradually increases.

Idel & End States
▲ Idel
▲ Work done!

If the phone is not detected, Woki remains in idel stage.
Work Mode
▲Normal
▲ Stage1
▲ Stage2
▲ Overworked!

As fatigue increases, Woki’s facial features slowly drop and become transparent.
If fatigue becomes too high, Woki stops working and issues a warning.
Rest Mode
▲ Resting
▲ Encouraged

When a break is taken (phone disconnected), Woki enters rest mode and recovers from fatigue. If stepping away is not possible, Woki can be encouraged to lower fatigue.

Ending Work: Daily & Long-Term

At the end of the day, if targeted work hours are reached, the house is fully built. Otherwise, it remains partially constructed.

Over time, a personal Woki town can be developed. Selecting different materials before each session allows for customization of the town’s appearance.
